Where to Shop
Not all Thai supermarkets are equal for Western ingredients. Here is where to go for what.
Makro
Cash-and-carry wholesale. The best prices on cheese, butter, bacon, and imported goods in bulk. You need a free membership card, any ID works. This is where you stock the freezer.
Best for: cheese, butter, bacon, frozen goods, bulk flour and oil.
Villa Market
The expat supermarket. Smaller stores, higher prices, but the widest Western range: proper cheddar, cream cheese, sour cream, fresh herbs, imported everything. If it exists in Thailand, it is probably here.
Best for: hard-to-find imports, cheese, herbs, baking supplies.
Foodland
Similar to Villa Market, open 24 hours in some branches. Good import section and a proper butcher counter.
Best for: late-night shopping, imports, meat.
Big C / Big C Extra
The big general hypermarket. The Extra branches have larger import sections. Covers 80 percent of a Western shopping list at normal prices.
Best for: everyday Western staples, canned goods, pasta, dairy basics.
Lotus's
Like Big C, slightly more Thai-focused. Fine for basics, weaker on imports.
Best for: basics at low prices.
Rimping
Northern chain (Chiang Mai area) with a strong import and organic range. If you are in the north, this is your Villa Market.
Best for: imports and organic in the north.
7-Eleven
On every corner. Milk, eggs, butter, bread, cheese slices, yogurt. Not a full shop, but it saves a trip.
Best for: emergency dairy and bread.
Fresh markets (ตลาดสด)
Say it: dtà-làat-sòt. Cheapest produce, meat, and eggs. Go early. Bring cash and a smile. Show vendors the Thai script on your phone.
Best for: produce, pork, chicken, eggs, palm sugar, grated coconut.
